One of our customers got a Toshiba Pocket PC with a pre-release version of the Pocket PC 2003 OS. The real thing is, from what I understand, coming out June 23.

Our eVB app does not work on this Toshiba -- at startup it displays an error saying the eVB runtimes are not installed. I thought the eVB runtimes (pvbload.exe etc.) were pre-installed with the Pocket PC OS except on very old devices. Anyone know if that is no longer the case with Pocket PC 2003?

For that matter, we install the eVB runtimes as part of our setup, just to be sure and in case we' re running on some device that does not have them. We' ve never had a problem with this. We' re installing pvbload.exe, pvbdecl.dll, pvbform2.dll, pvbhost2.dll and vbscript.dll. Any reason why this should not work on a Pocket PC 2003 device?

Thanks for any help!

Terry

According to a Microsoft written document I read recently on the web...

" Pocket PC 2003 devices do not include the eMbedded Visual Basic or ADOCE runtimes in ROM. However, well-behaved eVB applications will be able to run on Pocket PC 2003 devices supported by the following methods:

OEMs – can choose to put the eVB runtime into their ROM region in Pocket PC 2003 and therefore support eVB applications out of the box.

Application Developers – can choose to download the eVB runtime from http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/eVB/ and redistribute it with their application.

End Users – who try to run an eVB application that is not packaged with the eVB runtime on a Pocket PC 2003 device which does not have the runtime installed, will be faced with a prompt that points them to http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/eVB/ to download the eVB runtime."

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem with the Toshiba (running PPC 2003). I tried to download the microsoft cab file http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/evb/
but it would not install on the toshiba. I received a message stating that it was " not the correct device" . Has anyone successfully run a eVB app on PPC 2003?

Tang,

Yes please post the article that says the eVB runtime won' t be included in Pocket PC 2003. This will impact my company heavily.

Thanks,

I tried to install this microsoft fix on a toshiba 355 running Pocket PC 2003 and received a message stating that the .cab file is not made for this device. Were you able to get the program running on the toshiba?

Me too! The runtime/controls package won' t install. Must have something to do with the CPU id I think, or they posted the wrong cab-files.

Ok guys - I got this back from MS:

quote:

Do you know whether its an ARM or XScale processor? OEM should return ARMv4 though its an XScale processor. Do you what OEM is reporting on these devices? If it still reports ARMv4 then I will move this issue into a
support incident.

If you' ve had this error please report back with the device type.

NTT DoCoMo Sigmarion 3
Intel-ARM PXA255 Xscale 400MHZ
OS is Windows CE.net 4.1(Build 908)

I builded a test application with .cf net and I can run ARMv4 or ARMv4T builded cabs properly. I think this an issue with the script of the cab-installer.

For those of you who have been having trouble some relief is in site. I just got this from MS:

I don' t want to confuse this issue, but MS tech support is telling me today that they are planning to release a change to the CAB file, but there will be no changes to the runtime:

" The update is meant for certain devices where the OEM did not implement one of the requirements that the CAB installer checks for. So we are attempting to work around that problem. As I mentioned in my previous email, the update is only to the CAB file, not to the runtime itself."

I have installed the runtimes on my iPaq 2215. It worked fine. However, my app does not work. (What fun it is to troubleshoot eVb code on a 2003 device, ick).

I can' t open a connection to my database!

Here is the code that used to work:

Set cn = CreateObject(" ADOCE.Connection.3.0" )
cn.ConnectionString = " Data Source = " & strDatapath & " \PFL2.cdb"
cn.Open

Now, it fails on cn.Open where is did not fail before.

Help!
