So are you saying the comm and winsock controls should work anyway? Have you tried these runtimes yourself - any problems?

I'm wondering if it would be better to just move to Visual Studio .NET....

Hi,
not tried them - we moved to VS.Net - that would be my advice, as with eVB, you are now going down a blind alley as far as further development is concerned

Pete

I agree that for future development, .Net is the way to go.
However, you stated catagorically "Remember, eVB will not run on Windows Mobile 5", this is NOT the case.
I installed our In House evb programs onto a Dell Axim x51 running Windows Mobile 5 and it runs.
We have purchased Visual Studio.net and will rewrite eventually.
Having read your comment we were panicking as this software is used by nearly all our clients and they are constantly upgrading their Handhelds.
You really should NOT make such statements unless you know them to be true.
As a moderator, people could assume you know what you are talking about!

usamick - eVB apps really ran Ok on WM2005? That would be of great relief to me as well. Did you just install the 2003 runtime and it worked?

And to defend Pete, it was Microsoft that stated that eVB would not work on WM2005.

usamick2003 -> RE: will eVB apps work on Pocket PC 2003 devices? (10/27/2005 12:06:14 PM)

I am testing as I speak.
The software seems to run perfectly using the 2003 runtime.
The only thing I cannot get to work is some Socket Scanner stuff.
No biggy as I can just assign a key to the scanner.

I should complete all my testing by tomorrow and will give you an update.

However, so far so good.

Hi,
the 'eVB apps will not run on Windows Mobile 5' is the official line from Microsoft, and as far as I understood, that was, and still is the case.

Having not yet got a Windows Mobile 5 device (or have any apps still left in eVB), I can only go off what I have been told by the authors of the development tools.

On the eVB downloads page you see
quote:

eMbedded Visual Basic is not supported from Pocket PC 2003 onwards although the runtime is available as an unsupported download from Microsoft. While the runtime will install on Pocket PC 2003 and Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition, it will not install or run on future Windows Mobile devices. For this reason, Microsoft recommends that developers of eMbedded Visual Basic applications begin porting their applications to Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Compact Framework.

Your app may well work, and if so, good luck. Certainly for my LOB apps, I wouldn't risk it. Your mileage may vary.

Pete

Pete,
Sorry, didn't mean to upset.
Just convinced my Boss to spend over $800 he didn't want to and now I have egg on my face.

Do you get to Old Trafford (Theatre of Dreams) much?
I lived and worked in Manchester for a few years.
Also worked in Lythem St Annes for a while and drove past the Bolton Stadium everyday.

Hi,
only ever go to watch Bolton play there.

The $800 is not wasted - honestly

got a few questions here :
1. if eVB will not work in future mobile devices, and since eVB is free, what's the alternative "free" development software for pda and future mobile devices.

2. In palm os, though it's not in this site, what is their "free downloadable dev. software"

And i would like to take this oppotunity to thank Pete for helping me and new users of eVB. Thanks a lot.[:)]

Hi Neil,
I promised an update.
I have tested our application end to end and it works just as well as it did on 2003.
The only problem is the scanner. I cannot Register vbceCreateProcess
This means that I cannot fire the scanner from a button in the application but will have to fire it from a button on the handheld.

I guess it all depends on the processes and dll's you are using.
Maybe I was just lucky.

We are going to re-write anyway, but at least I have some breathing room.

NeilD -> RE: will eVB apps work on Pocket PC 2003 devices? (10/31/2005 4:37:10 AM)

That's interesting news - thanks for the update. I'll be keen to try my app now.

I also use a socket scan scanner, but not often so I'm not too worried about it.

Sorry it's been a while since I looked here. The Palm OS Developer Suite (PODS) is based on the Eclipse IDE as I understand it. As it's a free registration and download, you've nothing to lose by trying it out. Keep in mind that as far as I know, this is specifically for the Palm OS devices (hence the name) and does not address the new Windows Mobile Treo phone.

Interesting reading on the WM5 update - I have an X51V and although I plan a rewrite in EVC for this, I haevn't tried the original software yet.

Hi guns666,
In response to your question, I believe you can use the FREE Visual Studio EXPRESS versions of software to develop for the newer OS's... but I haven't actually tried them yet.

Give em a try and let us know what u think.

Hope it works out for you.

David

AFAIK,the Express versions of Visual Studio 2005 only support 1 programming language per install and do NOT support Mobile Devices (according to the MS website). Looks like you have to pay to play on the PocketPC 2005. The Mobile 5.0 SDK requires a minimum of Visual Studio 2005 Standard. FWIW, the Windows Mobile 5.0 Developers Resource Kit comes with a 90 day trial of VS 2005 Pro.
