I, like many have always had the emulator in evb (visual tools) crash with windows XP.
(I think its due to the virtual driver)
Anyways, after finding no help anyway, I work out how to make it work!!!
1. Download The Dev powertoys from here

2. Go into the platrorm manager, and with your pda plugged in, activesync connected, press the test button (in emulator properties).
All will work!
(your project will be in the start button of the emulator)
Basically, the powertoys use Activesync to emulate, not the virtual driver. (Which I think causes the problems)
Note: the virtual driver in your Hardware devices control panel still needs to be enabled.
Yay, no more crashing!
Oh yeah... put this in the appropriate directory and install it, so you can register components on the emulator properly :)
