Status: offline 		I got an iMATE PocketPC Phone edition phone about a month ago. At the time I didn't even know what it was. Now I don't know how I could have lived without it. Visual Studio Magazine has earned 200 cool points in my book by featuring a Special Report in the June 2004 issue on Mobility. The feature products and my personal favorite, the iMATE. There are two versions, the PPC Phone Edition and the Smartphone. The PPC Edition has a whopping 128 mb of RAM, 64 mb of ROM, built in BlueTooth, (SD Card support and I have a 512 mb card which is plenty), an Integrated Camera and a bunch more. Man it rocks. Many props to Derek Mitchell at http://www.devbuzz.com for it!

If you want to learn more about the iMATE, and you do, they featured a cool link http://www.Clubimate.com . It offers an email service that I won't get into b/c you need to go there yourself to see how cool it is, but trust me, it's worth the click. Another cool link is http://www.carrierdevices.com that you'll no doubt find interesting.

Finally, they featured a piece on Component One's new Flex Grid for the CF. I just downloaded it last night so haven't had a ton of time, but it's got progress bars in the grid which is a killer UI Touch, much like the one in Pocket TaskVision but cooler. Status: offline 		My man D Mitchell had the hookup on the phone but its basic GPRS so my T-Mobile SIM plugged in and that was it. I used a T-Mobile PPC phone before and this is in a whole different stratosphere of cool. The only gripe that I have with it, if you want to call it that, is that it's too easy to hit the Camera button and you can leave the camera running without knowing it, but that's easily worked around and quite trivial.

Status: offline 		I need to start developing the NetPerceptor Agent for Smartphone 2003 devices. I'm considering buying the iMate Smartphone 2. I'm currently a Sprint/CDMA subscriber. If I bought this device, do you think I would be able to walk up to a T-Mobile store and get it activated with a new wireless plan from them?

Yes, you can. I had a CDMA plan from Verizon when I got my first Smartphone. Since my plan was through my job and we bought a bunch of contracts, I could just cancel it and give the minutes to everyone else. So I did. Went to T-Mobile and although I was told there's no such thing as SmartPhones in the US, but they did have some really smart phones with Cameras and everything, I was a bit worried. I had been told by Paul O'Brien of www.modaco.com that I'd be ok though and was willing to take the risk - Paul knows his stuff and it was a good bet. Anyway, went to T-Mobile, got a phone activated (they wouldn't just give me the SIM so I had to take the phone which was free). Anyway, I pulled out the SIM, stuck it into my Smartphone and all was good. Fast Forward to the iMATE. I knew the service was a lot better than their sales people's knowledge of other phones, so I figured I'd not waste my time asking them about anything. Just pulled out my SIM from the SmartPhone, plugged it into iMATE, started iMATE and all was well. It was so painless on both counts that's its not worth mentioning. As a matter of fact, talking to the sales people was much more difficult than getting the phones working, the Smartphone or the iMATE.

To that end, I think it's a safe bet you'll have no problem whatsoever. Just don't get talking to the sales people b/c they'll likely tell you a bunch of crap of which they are clueless. On three occassions they told me three different phones I had didn't exist in the US. Same holds for every other carrier so I'm not beating up on T-Mobile... actually I like them the best.

I'm planning on blogging about my experience with Verizon last week. They found out a bunch of us were giving up our Verizon plans so we could use T-Mobile and our Smartphone...I wish I had a recording of it.

Get the iMATE and go with T-Mobile, I couldn't be happier with both of them.

Status: offline 		I appreciate all the info Bill. I'll check around for some product reviews on their new Smartphone2 and if things look good, I'll pull the trigger.

On another note, I just received word today that NetPerceptor passed all the Windows Mobile logo tests so we're good to go for the contest.

How's business these days? Are you getting to work on any mobile projects?
